I never planned it this way, but at least as summer ended this year I couldn’t complain of having let the season slip by without doing anything. It started by seeing an online post about one Shakespeare festival right after I’d seen the first play in another festival. When all was said and done, I’ve seen a total of 17 plays this summer, 12 Shakespeare plays, and 5 other plays, produced by 6 different Shakespeare festivals, in 3 different states. And if you count the Mike Daisey monologues (which technically occurred in the fall), the number of theatrical productions I saw was 21. It also brings the count of live Shakespeare productions I’ve seen to 115.
I think it will be hard to repeat this again anytime soon. Sometimes it’s been a strain, but overall it’s been fun and very satisfying. I think I’m ready for a break, but there is also a play or two that are still on my list, so who knows when this streak will come to an end. It has all been quite varied, but generally always quite good. None that I wish I hadn’t gone to. Maybe some better planning ahead would be of benefit, but for now, it all turned out very well.
