Tonight I again joined Bob for a trip to the opera. This time to the Opera San Jose to see Verdi’s Rigoletto. This was the first time I’d seen this Verdi opera, and while the music was beautiful this one had a fairly grim tragic storyline.
We drove down in somewhat heavy traffic on a rainy Saturday night. The opera was performed at the California Theater, which is near San Jose State University. We got some dinner at a food court ahead of time. The weather precluded us eating outside, and there were few table spaces so we stood and ate our burritos at a counter. Afterward, we went into the theater and heard a pre-show organ recital in the lobby before the opera.
It has been quite a while since I’ve been to an opera. This is a very well known opera and had some beautiful pieces in it, but I did find the overall story fairly grim, even considering it was a tragedy. Nonetheless it was an enjoyable evening.
