I spent an entire day with semi-local model Her Stillness Dances exploring a variety of locations across Sonoma County, ranging from the wine country, through the redwoods, and out to the ocean. It was great to be traveling with someone who was familiar with the area. After picking her up, we began the day at Tolay Lake Regional Park near Placerville. It was a grey foggy morning that added to the atmosphere. We also got to meet some nice goats. We then drove west and visited the Redwood forests. On the way to our next destination, we stopped at an iconic church in Bodega where some scenes from Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds were filmed. We then went tot Landpaths’ Grove of Old Trees near Occidental. While I’ve certainly seen Redwoods before, I’m not sure I ever went out and walked amongst them before in all my time in California. It was a nice little spot. We then popped into Occidental for nice lunch at Howard’s Station Cafe. After that we headed over to the ocean along the Sonoma Coast, and walked down onto Marshall Gulch Beach. It was pretty grey and foggy there, but again nicely atmospheric. We drove up the coast a bit and then started heading back east along the Russian River (116). We stopped into one river access point along the way visiting a favorite local swimming area. All in all a very nice day visiting many places I had never been before in all my years out here.
