Tosca

Tosca, Opera San JoseTonight I again joined Bob for a trip to the opera. This time to the Opera San Jose to see Puccini’s Tosca. This was the first time I had been to Opera San Jose, the first time I’d seen a Puccini opera, and the first time I’d seen Tosca.

We drove down in somewhat heavy traffic, but it was counter-commute. The opera was performed at the California Theater, which is near San Jose State University, and the area seemed was pretty cleared out by the time we got there. We got some dinner at a food court ahead of time, and it was warm enough that we could eat outside. Afterward, we went into the theater for a pre-show lecture. The theater is a beautifully ornate 1920s-style movie theater. After the lecture, there was an organ recital in the lobby before the opera.

Apparently, one of the missions of Opera San Jose is to cultivate new talents, so they are a little more experimental than the San Francisco Opera. I thought the music, singing, and production were great. Tosca is a classic melodramatic operatic story, where all the principals are dead by the end. As we left the theater, the area was hopping as there seem to be a number of live music venues in the area. I enjoyed the evening, and it was a nice dose of culture.

Jenn Jones On A Gloomy Day

Jennifer Jones, Livermore, 2023I had the pleasure of having another photo shoot at my house with local model Jennifer Jones on what turned out to be a grey drizzly day. I’m glad to have the opportunity to work repeatedly with Jenn. We started off an hour later than originally planned, which had the side benefit of giving the space heater a little longer to warm up the garage. Because of the weather, we ended up not shooting outside at all but ended up shooting in the house and the garage. Jenn had brought some velvet fabric which really picked up the light nicely. We also spent quite a bit of time experimenting with light painting, which always turns out to be a slow process. Towards the end, I was getting a bitter handle on it and could at least be a little more deterministic in what we were trying to create — but it’s always a bit of a surprise when you see the final image. We had scheduled 4 hours to shoot, but time always seems to fly by quickly when I’m working with Jenn. I’m sure we’ll have many more opportunities to work together again.

Photo Shoot With Charlotte

Charlottemodel, Livermore, 2023A week after I returned from my Jamaica trip, I connected up with local model Charlotte for a photo shoot at my house. It was a cold and sometimes-grey day, so we didn’t shoot outdoors. Nevertheless, time seemed to fly by, and we made a bunch of nice shots inside, then also were able to work in the cool garage to do some Hollywood-style lighting and some light painting. It was great to meet Charlotte, and I hope we are able to work together frequently in the future.

Good Vibes Only — Jamaica

My first adventure of the year was a trip to Jamaica for another Femme Nue photography retreat. While I had been to the Caribbean a couple of times, more than 20 years ago for scuba diving, this was my first trip to Jamaica.

When I signed up with the State Department’s STEP website, I was surprised to find that they had a Level 3 warning, mostly due to violent crime in a variety of areas. I set that aside, but I kept my radar up. Overall I had no problems, but I did have a few very interesting encounters with the locals, who where all friendly but also seemed to be running various games. To wit, I was solicited twice if I was interested in getting any women (once from an employee in the airport), and 4 or 5 times if I was interested in any ‘smoke’. None of these encounters seemed ominous, and the overall feel (at least in the tourist area where I stayed in the hotel) was friendly and colorful … and the speech patterns live up to the characterization — Ya mon.

Before and after the retreat, I stayed in an all-inclusive hotel in Montego Bay, which turned out to be a nice way to do it. Although the food was ok/mediocre it saved me a lot of money on restaurants. It also included an open bar, and best of all free access to the Doctor’s Cave beach across the street, which enabled me to swim in the sea a number of times during my stay. The only downside was it was on a fairly busy and noisy road, and people there seemed to be up until the wee-wee hours making lots of noise out on the street.

Vivian Cove, Jamaica, 2022The photography retreat was at the beautiful Springville Villa, up on the hillside with a beautiful view of the hills and sea. It was just over the border into Hanover Parish, overlooking the great river bay. The villa had an infinity pool with an amazing view that looked out onto the sea. For our retreat, we had access to the grounds, a beach down below, and a couple of local houses up the hill on the road where the villa was located. We had our own butler and cook that took care of us well. I ended up booking two sessions, which gave me 5 full days of shooting and 2 half-days. During the retreat, I had the opportunity to shoot with Sienna Hayes and Vivian Cove, with whom I had worked a number of times, as well as a model new to me, Ali Claire, from Canada. Interestingly, one of the photographers on the first session was Patric who was the only other photographer on my last tour in Yucatán Mexico. In addition to shooting around our villa, we took a short excursion to a local beach where we shot for a few hours. A few of us also went on a snorkeling trip, where we took a boat out, snorkeled for a bit, and stopped on the way back at Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville.

After the retreat, I returned to the same hotel and just relaxed for a few days, swimming in the ocean and enjoying the ambiance of the place. Afterwards I returned home where it had been much colder, and very unusually had even gotten a little snow on the top of the local peaks. I had turned off the heat in my house, and when I returned, it was in the 40s.

A Year of Rebuilding and Massive Travel

Me, New Year, 2022-23Unlike 2021, which seemed to be a forgettable blur, this year has been busy and filled with lots of fun activities and positive accomplishments. It’s like I exploded out of the year of lockdowns and engaged in a huge amount of travel and photography this year. Perhaps more than was good for my budget, but it was enjoyable. This included my first-ever trip to France, where I stayed in a historic château for a photo retreat as well as in Paris for tourist exploration. It also included two fairly long trips to Yucatán, México, in the spring and again in the fall, which included two photography tours and one photo retreat. I also made two trips to Utah for photo tours. In addition to the photography on the six tours and retreats, I also arranged for seven 1-on-1 photoshoots, which took place both at home and while on travel and included one remote shoot. I took 25k pictures in 3 different countries, with 15 different models of 8 different nationalities. Apart from photography, I also made my annual trip to Colorado to see some Shakespeare, and then I traveled to Florida to do a little scouting and exploration. These 7 trips exceeded my initial budgeting and planning, but happily, some opportunities arose that I decided to take advantage of.

I was hoping that the theater side of my activities would return to normal this year. It did a bit, but not completely. CalShakes only managed to stage 2 Shakespeare plays (but they were both interesting). The Colorado Shakespeare Festival looked like it was returning to a full season, but when I got there 2 of the 5 scheduled plays were canceled due to Covid outbreaks in the cast (particularly unfortunate since the two were both Shakespeare plays). The local theater company staged a couple of plays, one of which was Shakespeare. It looked like the Oregon Shakespeare Festival might have had a couple of interesting offerings, but the description of the one I was most interested in looked like they were pushing some woke preachiness, which they’ve been leaning towards lately. This caused my interest to drop. So some good theater, but not as much as in earlier years.

On another cultural front, due to the passing of my friend Blanca, I’ve had the opportunity to go with Bob into the city to see several musical events; one performance of the SF Symphony, and 2 productions at the SF Opera. The cultural arts organizations still seem to be leaning pretty hard into the Covid culture, with Bay Area venues still checking vaccine records and requiring masks in order to gain entrance.

In addition to the fun activities, I also brought some of my infrastructures up to date. I replaced my ancient stove which was basically disintegrating; I had my plumbing repiped throughout the entire house, which touched off a cascade of home updates that have been long overdue, and are still in progress; and I also had some major maintenance done to my car. All of this coming in one year (not all of which was planned), combined with my also increased unplanned travel has challenged the budget a bit but hopefully, most of the big expenses were a once-in-a-long-while type of things. A downside to all of the home improvement activities was that I have gotten dreadfully behind in editing the pictures from my various trips. But that gives me something to do during the winter.

The highlights of the fun parts of my year include

  • 1 remote photo shoot (to New Zealand)
  • 6 1-on-1 photo shoots (3 at my house, 1 local area, 2 while traveling)
  • 2 US photography tours with models (6 different models)
  • 2 international photo retreats, 1-on-1 shoots with 7 different models
  • 2 international photo tours with models (3 different models)
    • shot with 15 different people, 6 of whom were new subjects for me
  • 7 live plays (4 Shakespeare, 1 Classical, 2 Contemporary)
  • 1 visit to the symphony and 2 to the opera

Next year I already have some travel and photography plans on the books, but I think it will be a bit more moderate than this year.

Lastly, in the last few year-end summaries I’ve noted that I needed to make some health-oriented lifestyle changes, and finally this year I’ve managed to make some progress in that area. Through a dietary change, and an attempt to increase my activity level, I managed to drop more than 30 lbs. I’m still not where I’d like to be, but I’m in a much healthier condition than I’ve been in quite a while, and I feel like I’m on a good path. I also entered into that wonderful era of the government’s health plan, so we will see how that works out in the coming year.

Another Photo Shoot With Jenn Jones

Jennifer Jones, Livermore, 2020I managed to schedule some time for a photo shoot with local model Jennifer Jones on the last day of November. We had worked together a couple of times earlier this year, and we both had a few ideas for some things to shoot. The last time we shot it was pretty hot outside, but this time it was quite cool. In fact, the garage was a bit like a refrigerator. Nonetheless, besides the indoor work, we briefly did some shooting in the backyard, and then went into the garage and experimented with some Hollywood glamor-type lighting.

I think we managed to get some interesting images. Jenn is a great, collaborative model. Just like the last time, I felt like we spent the time productively, but time went by quickly and we didn’t get to all the ideas we had come together with. A good reason to get together again.

The Fallen Woman

La TraviataTonight I joined Bob in going into the city to see the San Francisco Opera’s production of La Traviata. This is apparently one of the most popular operas currently performed, and this was a new production for the SF Opera. I don’t think I’d ever seen it before, though there were several passages of music that were familiar as they have almost become stereotypical opera music.

We went in early and had dinner at Max’s, and then listened to the pre-show lecture. We had a little adventure as about 15 minutes before the show was about to start the fire alarm went off and we all had to evacuate the building until the fire marshal cleared it. It turned out to be a false alarm. Everything finally started about a half-hour late.

The opera was beautifully performed and very moving. The music was wonderful, coming from the classical era of the 19th century. I very much enjoyed going even though it is making this week very busy.

Second, Marathon, Yucatán Trip of the Year

I had the opportunity to participate in two different photography events in Yucatán, México, despite having been here earlier in the spring, and I decided to do them both and combine them into one long trip. It also gave me an opportunity to visit Mexico during the Día de Muertos. My combined trip ended up being about 3 1/2 weeks, which capped off a year of lots of interesting travel.

Merida, Yucatan, Mexico, 2022To take advantage of plane ticket prices, I actually flew in 5 days before my first event, so I had quite a bit of time to acclimate and walk around the Centro region of Mérida. I wasn’t able to book the entire time at my first Airbnb, so I ended up moving to a hotel in the center of downtown. It turned out that that weekend had a big cultural street fair, La Noche Blanca, with lots of varied activities all around the downtown area. The crowd swelled out to right outside my hotel, so I decided to go out and explore it a bit. There was music, dancing, and I saw a cool fashion show that took place in the middle of a major street in front of the grand plaza that was blocked off. It was quite interesting, but it was also quite noisy until late in the night right outside my hotel window. Unfortunately, I suspect that I also picked up a virus that gave me a chest cold that I ended up fighting later in my trip.

Femme Nue — Yucatán

Sienna Hayes, Yucatan, Mexico, 2022My first photography event of the trip was a Femme Nue retreat, organized by the same people who organized my photography retreat in France. I checked out of my hotel and brought my stuff about 5 blocks to the restaurant where we were meeting up. After a nice welcome lunch, meeting all the models and photographers and family members, we headed out to Hacienda Sac Chich where we would be staying during our retreat. It was about 45 minutes southeast of Mérida. It was a large estate with 5 major buildings and it had lots of interesting places to shoot. In addition to the two organizers, Sienna Hayes and Vivian Cove, we had two other Canadian models to work with, Dane Halo, and Muirina Fae, and there were a half-dozen photographers who were part of the group. I enjoyed my stay and enjoyed the photography. I think I got some very nice shots. The only downside was that it was a bit hot and humid and I had forgotten my headband, but you can’t have everything.

Intermission and Día de Muertos

Los Salmones, Yucatan, Mexico, 2022After the farewell lunch of the Femme Nue retreat, I went to an Airbnb to hang out for a few days. I had arranged to visit my friend Humberto’s new house at the beach, but I still had to work out the logistics of getting there. It also gave me a few days away from people to recuperate from my chest cold. (I got a negative Covid test result before I joined other people). I eventually took a long Uber ride up to his beautiful house, which at the time of my arrival was overrun with photographers and nude models who just happened to be wrapping up their UTadventure tour at his house. It humorously made me think of arriving at the Playboy mansion when I got there. Humberto is a warm and welcoming host, and his house is amazing, sitting right on the gulf coast beach, with numerous guest rooms. After the UTadventure folks departed, there were some models from my Femme Nue retreat and my upcoming UTadventure tour staying there, as well as other friends of Humberto’s.

Cenote X'Canche, Ivory FLame, Lance Patrick, Alina Wulf, Dane Halo, Sara ScarletWe didn’t just relax and just hang out at the house. The next day started with breakfast in Motul at a local breakfast spot that just served egg dishes, Doña Evelia Huevos Motuleños. Then Humberto took us to a historic Mayan archeological site Ek’Balam (which was a bit pricy), where we walked around the ruins and climbed up the pyramid. Afterward, we went to a nearby cenote, Cenote X’Canché. This was only the second one I’ve been to, having been to Cenote Chelentún several times with UTadventure. This one was bigger and more open, with a lot of other people there. After a long day, we headed back up to the coast and had a fresh seafood dinner in a small local diner before going back to Humberto’s. Later in the evening, we headed into Merida to the central Plaza (right by where I had been staying earlier) to watch a Día de Muertos celebration, which turned out to be a stage production with traditional music and dancing. Humberto said that the traditional parades had been curtailed due to Covid. The next night we went back to Merida for a nice dinner and then dropped one of the models at the bus station.

The Next UTadventure Tour

Ivory Flame, Yucatan, Mexico, 2022Everyone participating in the UTadventure tour was gathered up and we headed into Izamal to get checked in for the next adventure. It started out with a bit of drama as one of our scheduled models bowed out due to some business conflict with Dima (and ultimately we lost one of the photographers who had joined particularly to work with this model). Nonetheless, we got started off with our kick-off lunch and then a late afternoon photo shoot. Compared with the spring tours, it appeared to become darker earlier, and the vegetation was lusher due to the tour coming after the rainy season. The first photo shoot, traditionally at our home Hacienda Santo Domingo, was very atmospheric and worked out great and I managed to get some new low-light images that were quite interesting.

Meghan Claire, Yucatan, 2022The second day of the tour was a water day. We started out at our traditional cenote, Cenote Chelentún in Cuzamá. By the time we left, it had started raining quite hard (although not cold) and we were all pretty drenched by the time we reached the cars. The afternoon’s shoot was a “beach shoot” back at Humberto’s house. I’m guessing Dima is saving a little money through Humberto’s generosity by not having to rent out our traditional beach location. It was a nice location to shoot though, although by this location we’d already had our one photographer drop out. So the majority of the tour consisted of just two photographers and two models, Meghan Claire and Ivory Flame, both of whom I’d worked with before (including working with them both previously this year) and who are awesome models and nice people. The smaller group turned out to be good for us photographers, as it was kind of like one of the mini-tours with plenty of time to work individually with the models.

Meghan Claire, Yucatan, Mexico, 2022The next day we had a mix of ancient and modern. We started the day at the historic archeological site at X’Cambó, which was much wetter and boggier than on my previous visits due to the rains. Then later in the day, we went to Mérida to the beautifully refurbished grand home Casa de las Torres. We had lunch in Mérida before the afternoon shoot and then stayed for dinner there as well. After dinner, we hung out for a bit to see another street show taking place at the central Plaza where they were doing a light projection show on the church again. Afterward, we headed back to Izamal to sleep.

Hacienda Ake, Ivory Flame, Me, Patrick HainesThe fourth day was a rest day, so I just relaxed in the morning. In the afternoon we went to Hacienda Aké which is next to another Mayan ruin. We shot around the property as usual, and I was successful in finding some new backdrops, and then towards sunset, we got access to a local horse that the models posed with. That was quite interesting and I was able to get some nice shots. When we were done we headed back to Izamal and had a nice dinner at Restaurante Zamna.

Our original plans got shifted around a bit due to some failed connections and commitments, but the alternatives turned out better from my perspective. The fifth day started early, and it was an interesting trip to the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve where we rode boats through the lagoons and got to see and shoot among lots of wildlife. The first part of the day was fun riding the boats and seeing the natural beauty and wildlife. After that, we ended up at the beach away from the main town to do some beach shots. That’s when I had one of the more amusing experiences of my photography adventures. We were shooting on the beach, and there was a grass-covered structure a little way down the beach. Dima went down to check it out and make sure there was no one there we would be offending. He came back and said they indicated it would be no problem; there were two women and one man and in fact one of the women was topless. So Patric and Meghan headed down and were shooting around them. Ivory Flame, Ria Lagartos, Yucatan, Mexico, 2022Eventually Ivory Flame and I headed in that direction as well. When we got there we discovered that the one woman wasn’t just topless, but in fact nude. They were also very drunk. They seemed to be enjoying watching us shoot, and the nude woman was really intrigued with Ivory Flame, who is striking with fair skin and bright orange hair. Quite a contrast to the darker Mexican lady. Eventually, it turned out she indicated she might like to join in and have some photos taken. So I ended up shooting her and Ivory Flame and made a few nice pictures that I sent to her. It was a little surreal having one of the local ‘civilians’ join us, but it was a fun and unique experience. After our boating trip, we stopped in town for lunch. On the way back, we explored a location or two near Puente las Coloradas and managed to grab a few shots.

Ivory Flame and Humberto, Yucatan, 2022On the last day of the tour we were able to shoot at Hacienda Baspul, which is owned by friends of Humberto. Although I’ve been there once before, I think I was able to find some new shots. They also brought out one of their geese, and we were able to shoot Meghan with it. After the shoot, we had a nice farewell lunch at Casa De Piedra. We had a nice meal and also celebrated Ivory Flame’s birthday.

Wrapping it Up

After the tour, I stayed in Merida for several more days, just walking around again, seeing the sights, and getting some souvenirs. A couple of days before I returned home, I got together with Dima for a nice dinner. Although this was a long 3 1/2 week trip, and it was a little wearing having to deal with my chest cold, I had a wonderful time on this trip. I was able to do lots of satisfying photography with some really wonderful models and experience lots of culture and beauty. I enjoy visiting Mexico, and I hope my next visit down there isn’t too far in the future.

New Photo Book

Model Photography vol. 3 - coverI just received a copy of a new photo book that I had created, centered around fine art portraiture taken around my house over the last several years. I conceived of this a year ago, but It has taken me this long to get a flow for the design that I was happy with. In the end, there is no solid design strategy, but I did have some idea behind the layout. It’s nice to see these beautiful images printed out. A preview of this book can be seen on my photo blog site here.

Antony and Cleopatra at the Opera

Antony and Cleopatra, SFO, 2022, Amina Edris and Gerald FinleyTonight I joined Bob and went into the city and saw the San Francisco Opera’s production of the brand new Antony and Cleopatra, based on Shakespeare’s play. This opera, which had its world premiere earlier this month, was written by notable local composer John Adams. It has been a long long time since I’ve seen an opera, and I don’t think I’ve ever before seen a modern one or one in English. We drove in and prior to the show we had dinner at Max’s Opera Cafe, and then went and listened to the pre-performance talk.

By and large, it was enjoyable. The music wasn’t as melodic as some of the more classical operas I have enjoyed, but it also wasn’t as weird as some modern orchestral pieces. The singing was terrific and the staging and production were quite interesting. I caught a few of the Shakespearean lines, but it wasn’t like seeing a theatrical play. I’m glad I saw it, but I’m not sure it’s converted me over to an opera fanatic. Sadly, this will be my last taste of live Shakespeare for the year.
