Pretzelle Photoshoot

Pretzelle, Livermore, 2025Today I had a photoshoot with model/contortionist Pretzelle who is based in the NYC area. Kisa Hues had recommeded me to her and we had connected through IG. She had a unique skillset: she’s a very good photogenic model for typical shooting, but she is also an extremely flexible contortionist who can assume some amazing shapes. Our day started a bit rough as she had trouble getting out of BART, and then got flustered when they finally let her out, so ended up going the wrong way and it took us a little while to connect up. Once we got started shooting, things settled down and we ended up have an very nice session. We then had a cheat lunch at in-and-out and I dropped her back in Oakland. It was an interesting shoot, and she makes me wish I was a bit more flexible.

A Return to Bali

Frangipani, Bali, 2025Approximately 1 1/2 years since my last visit I returned to the SE Asian tropical island of Bali. After the last trip I thought that would be my one and only visit, but Femme Nue created a nice event with some great models, and since my friend Maddy had not visited this part of the world I thought it would be worth a second visit. It was again a very long trip, where I had a plane change in Taiwan. I arrived in Bali mid-afternoon and made my way to my first hotel without issue (although I was a bit ripped-off in the airport taxi price). I had forgotten how warm and humid it was there. I had arrived a couple of days before a major religious holiday on the island. The day after I arrived there were Pangrupukan parades all over the island featuring dramatic sculptures (Ogoh-ogoh) which represent the darker aspect of human nature. This parade day preceded Nyepi, a day of silence and meditation with and no lighting or other things that could disturb the peace (and no going out into the streets). They take this quite seriously, and reportedly have even deported foreign visitors for violating the observance. My hotel had the windows covered over and had no lights in the halls and lobby (although they did serve meals). It was interesting to be there during this time. I took a few small walks, one trying to find a little grocery store, and I was reminded how absolutely insane the traffic is there. It’s really not geared for pedestrians, and I usually felt like I was taking my life in my own hands whenever I walked or tried to cross a street.

A couple of days later I moved for one night into a top tier hotel where we would have our meetup for the Femme Nue retreat. For this retreat there were 7 models and we split into two groups in two different villas, one more contemporary, and one more traditional in a jungle like setting. At the modern villa we had Nausicaa Yami, Lucy Tyler, Clara Rene, a French model who was new to me, and Vivian Cove. After a few days there the photographers switched villas, and I moved to the more traditional villa where we worked with Sienna Hayes, Sylph Sia, and another model new to me, Tezz Tran. It was a great retreat with some amazing models and I really enjoyed it. We did have a little issue at the first villa due to some miscommunication in the ownership where the staff was uncomfortable servicing us with nude photography present. Vivian Cove also got a very bad case of food poisoning just before the event started, so she was a bit out of the loop for the first few days. I stayed mostly healthy on this trip, however I did get a bit of diarrhea with an accompanying fever, but with a little medication it went away fairly quickly. Nonetheless, I was pretty cautious with eating during the entire trip. After having experienced Balinese food at a number of meals, by the end of the retreat the food we had brought in started being a bit more western by popular choice. It was nice to have the variety of the two different villas which had completely different vibes. We ended up the tour for our farewell luncheon at the same hotel where we started.

After the retreat, I moved into a villa in Seminyak managed by the same company that ran the villa I stayed in during the trip Humberto organized. It was a nice place with two bedrooms and a main living/dining area, a nice pool, all surrounded by a high privacy wall. It was close to the restaurant/bar/nightlife area which was nice but had the downside of being loud until quite late into the night. But it didn’t bother me too much. Maddy arrived the next evening and we picked her up from the airport. The plan for the vacation was mostly to relax and not over program trips. A couple of days after arriving, Maddy had identified a special Spa treatment that they did in Bali, so we got our driver to take her over for a 2 1/2 hour experience that she really enjoyed. After a few days of just taking things easy, visiting some local restaurants and letting Maddy adjust to the time change, we had our first planned event. We went to the southern part of the island to visit the Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) Statue/Culture Park. It was a very hot day and walking around and taking pictures almost did me in for a bit. We enjoyed walking around and seeing the sights, art, and statues, then we had a nice relaxed lunch with a view overlooking the countryside. I eventually recovered from my heat exposure. After this we went to the cliffside Pura Luhur Uluwatu Temple which is populated with monkeys. This gave us a nice exposure to Balinese Hindu culture and architecture and Maddy got to experience an attempted monkey theft, but they didn’t get anything from her. We got home a a decent hour though the traffic was pretty bad.

The next day we decided to check out the beach, and even though it was relatively close we decided to take a Grab rather than dealing with the unfriendly pedestrian experience. It was super cheap and we decided that was a better way to go for our future local trips. We went to Seminyak Beach and walked around a bit and ended up going to La Plancha for dinner. We had a nice view of the ocean an the setting sun. The next day Maddy got a Balinese massage at our villa, which was relatively inexpensive. Apparently getting massages in Bali is the thing to do. We spent some relaxing days, enjoying some local restaurants, and on our last day in the villa we returned to Seminyak Beach for dinner.

We checked out of our villa and embarked on the second phase of our vacation. Our next lodging was in Ubud (where my photo retreat villas were also located), and on the way we had the driver take us to the Pura Tirta Empul Hindu Balinese Water Temple. It is a beautiful temple that provided another look at the Balinese Hindu religious culture. After vising the temple, and escaping the tourist-trap exit maze, we drove to our next lodging, and Airbnb. Ubud is known as the spiritual heart of Bali, and this place had a beautiful garden and pool that was carefully maintained by the owner. It was a bit particularly located as we had to be dropped off and walk the last 100m to find the place, but it was a relaxing place. After our long ride and lack of food Maddy’s first reaction was “I hate it” and “the restaurants are probably a health hazard”, but after settling in for a while and getting her energy back her opinion eventually turned around and she ended up liking it the best. It really was a peaceful place. While there we ate dinner at a nearby vegetarian restaurant, Sage, almost every night. While in Ubud we didn’t do any big trips, but we to a Grab into the main part of town a couple of times for some nice meals and some shopping. We spent three days there and then headed to our final destination.

We checked out of our place in Ubud and went to a hotel right across from the beach in Kuta. It was a nice place with a beautiful rooftop pool and view. We spent our last days in Kuta just walking around a bit, having some nice meals, relaxing and shopping. After three nights there our time was up and we headed to the airport to go home. I had a long but relatively uneventful flight home. Maddy had a less than wonderful on her flight where the flight attendants weren’t too good. She got home and readjusted rather quickly. Despite adapting quickly to Bali time when I flew west, my sleep has remained messed up since I got back.

It was a fun and varied trip. We had less sightseeing programmed in than my last trip, but it was nice to just relax and take in the area and culture. I don’t know that I’ll be back again, but I’m glad I made this second trip.

Illyria Wulf Photoshoot

Alaina Wulf, Livermore, 2025Right before disappearing for a month I had a fun and productive photoshoot with Illyria Wulf, almost a year to the day since we last worked together. In that time she has relocated to Salt Lake City, and it was nice to work with her again. Due to her schedule we ended up working later than I normally do photoshoots, and she got tied up in traffic and was even an hour later than planned. Nonetheless we shot and explored a wide variety of setups and wardrobe. It was a very warm day (the first spring/summerish day of the year), so it was nice working outside. It would have been nice to have even a bit more time, but that’s for the future.

Return to Hawaiʻi

Ali Claire, Hawaii, 2025In my first photo event of the year, and my first photo tour in a while, I returned to the Hawaiian islands visiting “the big island” of Hawaiʻi for the first time. This was a Femme Nue event, which they’ve categorized as Aventura to distinguish it from their single-location retreats that they’re now designating as Luxe. We began on the Kona (west) side but we stayed and did most of our touring and photography on the Hilo (east) side of the island. So my pre-/post- days had some beautiful sunsets while many of our photoshoots were aimed at the sunrises. Our group featured 4 models, 3 of whom I had shot with before: US model Vivian Cove, Canadian models Sienna Hayes and Ali Claire, and 1 who was new to me: UK model Nicole Rayner. There were 6 photographers all from the western US, of which I only knew one from previous events.

Prior to the tour I stayed in an Airbnb right on the ocean and basically across the street from our meetup restaurant on the west side of the island. I enjoyed some nice meals overlooking the ocean along with some beautiful Hawaiian sunsets. After our kickoff brunch we drove 2 hours to the other side of the island to a large house on the outskirts of Hilo, which served as our home base. Our shoot the first evening was at Mackenzie Point, a cliffside location overlooking the ocean. One of our cars was given the wrong coordinates so we lost 2 photographers and 1 model to another location. But they ended up shooting where they ended up so all was ok.

We got up pre-dawn the next morning and headed to Waiʻale Falls. We got some sunrise shots at the waterfall. We also got reported to the cops by a local, and while they were waiting for us as we left, they didn’t give us any trouble. After a mid-day break, we headed to a beautiful private property, Casa de las Palmas (art), that had beautiful flowers and tropical gardens.

The next morning we again got up pre-dawn and headed to another private property which was the site of an old mill and had a black sand beach. We were able to get some nice sunrise shots on the beach. Afterward, we again took a mid-day break, had lunch, and then headed to the Observatory Road Lava Fields for a late afternoon shoot. It was quite barren and rough terrain, but provided interesting backdrops for the models even though it was a difficult surface to lay on.

The next morning we got up early and headed to Kehena Beach, another black sand beach. It is supposed to be a nude beach, but it was also covered with fishermen when we got there at sunrise. Unfortunately, early in our shoot one of our models, Ali, got knocked off of a high perch on a lava rock by a large wave and she ended up severely cutting her leg. We decided to call off the remainder of the shoot. However, while Ali was getting treated as we were riding back the guys in my car decided to put together a humorous video that we were going to slip into the photo review planned for that evening. It included “bts” of me shooting some of the male photographers posing nude. When it was shown it caught all the others by surprise and caused quite a laugh.

The last morning we went to another lava field which was along the seaside. We took some nice sunrise shots and enjoyed our last morning of shooting. We then went back to our base, packed up, and headed back to Kona for our farewell lunch.

It was nice to be back and visit Hawaiʻi. I needed this trip to shake me out of my sedentary cabin fever from the winter. It was a nice brief trip.

Christelle Photoshoot

Christelle, Livermore, 2025In the last of my early year cluster of photoshoots I worked with another model who was new to me, Christelle from Québec, Canada. She is good friends with Lana, the previous model I shot with. Due to a series of logistical difficulties and schedule changes our original 4 hours got truncated, and a missed train made it even shorter. Nonetheless, Christelle was very talented and creative and we managed to get a variety of nice shots. She was very pleasant to work with and I hope we get a chance to work together again under less rushed circumstances.

Lana Koz Photoshoot

Lana Koz, Livermore, 2025In another of the cluster of photoshoots starting this year, I had an opportunity to work with model Lana Koz. Lana is Polish/French-Canadian, originally from Québec and currently living in Vienna where she is working on her Masters in International Finance. As she had another shoot in the morning we didn’t get started until the afternoon. She was a lot of fun to work with and was very collaborative with great ideas for images. The shoot went very well, then we grabbed some dinner before I drove her back to her lodging in SF (the same place I’ve dropped a couple of other models over the last year). I hope the opportunity to work with her again presents itself.

Katrina White Photoshoot

Katrina White, Livermore, 2025Following in my rapid sequence of photoshoots, I got together with local model Katrina White. Despite the forecast most of the day was a bit gray and rainy. We did take an opportunity during a break in the rain to spend a little while shooting outside. Due to her schedule our session was a bit later than I usually shoot, and we ended up shooting until after dark. We got a nice variety of images and it was great to make the acquaintance of another local model.

Cassandra Spencer Photoshoot

Cassandra Spencer, Livermore, 2025While I had been a bit overwhelmed at the end of the year with the number of photoshoots I had in 2024, I’m starting 2025 at a bit of a fast pace again. For my second photoshoot of the year, in less than a week, I got to work with semi-local model Cassandra Spencer. I had been following her work for a while on social media for a while I decided it was time to reach out and try to schedule something. We had a nice session together (although it started a bit early for my taste). We created a nice variety of shots, and I look forward to working with her again sometime.

Vivian Cove at the Yurt

Vivian Cove, Yurt, Santa Cruz, 2025For my first photoshoot of the year, I got together with local model Vivian Cove. She had rented a yurt in the mountains north of Santa Cruz. While it was a cool grey day we were able to get some nice pictures around the property as well as in the colorfully decorated yurt. It’s a bit of a trek down there, but it was enjoyable to get away from home for a bit.

2024 — A Year Of Ups And Downs

Me, Livermore, 2025This year really had its ups and downs. Overall I’ve been very busy, getting to do fun things and accomplishing a lot. On the upside I’ve done more 1-on-1 photoshoots than I could have imagined in a year, even after having to cancel 3 for different reasons for the first time ever. I also had a great trip to a new country (Spain) and a new area of a country I’ve visited a number of times, visiting Tulum, Mexico. This year I also tried to broaden my artistic scope by shooting with a male model on one of my tours. It has been great meeting and working with new collaborators, but I am now embarrassingly behind in my editing.

It’s the first year that I’ve ever had to had to cancel photoshoots, and pay the price$. The first big kink in my plans for the year happened with getting chosen for jury duty, which consumed almost the entire month of April. It was challenging and stressful but it was important to have done it. But it also forced me to cancel out on a couple of photo shoots I had already booked in advance. Then on my tour in Utah, I developed a back problem which became so sever I had to cancel out on almost half of the planned shooting locations. The last kink was having booked 4 photoshoots in the first 3 weeks after returning from Spain, only to get Covid on my return forcing me to cancel one.

In addition to fun stuff, I finally managed the “Herculean” task of painting and reorganizing my office, which has been a disaster for a decade. I also got a major refresh to the outside of my house, which although unplanned at this time it managed to accomplish major things on my ToDo list that realistically would have taken me years to finish. So I guess I traded $$$ for time, never an easy thing for me to do, but I think the result is a good thing. As my age progresses that seems like a more intelligent tradeoff.

I took more than 32k pictures in 3 different countries, on 2 different continents, working with 36 different models from 12 different nations. This year I had way more opportunities to do 1-on-1 shoots with models who were new to me, as a number of models I had never worked with before continued to reached out to me when they were visiting the area. Still, I need to learn to say no more often. I’m slowly still trying to improve the set design of my shooting spaces to allow for more interesting and varied photos. I still have a goal to continue to have pictures published in the coming year.

The theater side of my activities fell off of a cliff this year. I only saw one play locally, and I didn’t make any Shakespeare related trips to Oregon or Colorado this year. On a sad note, CalShakes which led to me to my love of Shakespeare and whose annual seasons I’ve attended for more than 35 years announced that they are dissolving. On the other hand, Bob dragged me along to see 3 classic operas this year which meant my culture didn’t completely snuff out.

The highlights of the fun parts of my year include

  • Visited 1 new country (Spain)
  • 26 1-on-1 photo shoots (20 at my house, 5 local area, 1 international)
  • 1 US photography tour with 2 models (1 female, 1 male)
  • 2 international photo retreats/tours, 1-on-1 shoots with 15 different models
  • 1 local photo workshop with 2 models
    • shot with 36 different models, 22 of whom were new subjects for me
  • had a photoset published, and 1 photo included with a prestigious publication
  • 1 live play (Shakespeare)
  • 3 visits to the opera

The less-fun parts of the year included

  • Jury Duty on a serious 1-month case
  • Major downtime from pinched nerve in my back
  • Getting Covid after returning from travel
  • 4 front teeth crowned

Next year I already have some travel and photography plans on the books.

My battle to improve healthy aspects of my lifestyle continues. I’ve unfortunately bounced back in weight (initiated after the down time while sick), and I definitely need to redouble my efforts this year. It’s clear that as the years pile on, keeping a focus on health is a necessity. I’m grateful that I’m still able to be active and pursue my interests to the degree I have. I’m looking forward to a new year of interesting travels, creative opportunities and new friends.
