Magnolia Photoshoot

Miss Magnolia Muse, Livermore, 2024I had a photoshoot today with an east coast based model, Magnolia, who I was previously unaware of and who had reached out to me through Model Mayhem. Due to her packing her schedule, we started very early (for me) but that means we got done in the morning. She is a biotech worker who had modeled through college, with 10 years of experience, but due to a recent layoff was exploring the traveling model path. Due to our introductory chit-chat running a bit long our time was a bit constrained. Nonetheless, I think we were able to capture a good variety of images. I was also able to try out my new Fresnel modifier, so I’ll be interested how those turned out. She was easy going and had nice poses. The only downside was she showed up a little late, and wanted to leave a little early for her next booking. However, I was still able to capture a good number of shots, and I hope to be able to work with here again in the future.

The Decrepit Tour

Auroraa, Christian, Stansburry Island, UTadv, 2024My next trip of the year was to be a UTadventure tour built around an idea I had talked about with Auroraa when she and I shot together earlier in the year. The idea was to have the opportunity to shoot with a male model in order to broaden my artistic horizons and and stretch my creative muscles. She was excited about creating this new opportunity as she had already been communicating with a male model who was interested in doing the kind of shooting they do. This tour would also be visiting some locations in northern Utah where I haven’t visited on my previous tours.

The first hiccough occurred a couple of weeks before I was set to leave. A problem arose between the organizers and the male model they had originally planned on using. After a bit of scrambling they identified a couple of local male models as well as throwing in the opportunity to do a maternity shoot with a local female model. This sounded like a good plan going forward. Unfortunately, another problem arose a few days before I was bout to leave for the trip. I developed a problem in my lower back (which I think is a pinched nerve) that caused some sciatica pain. I rested as much as I could before leaving, and things seemed to be improving a little, and I decided to proceed with the trip. The travel was grueling with the public transportation and the plane ride. By the time I got there I had aggravated the problem.

I rested the evening I arrived but was in worse shape in the morning of the day we had originally planned to have two different shoot locations. For better or worse, Dima’s car developed a problem, and the morning shoot was scrubbed (which was probably a good thing, giving me a chance to rest more), and after some scrambling we proceeded with the evening shoot at Stansburry Island on the southwestern side of the Great Salt Lake. This featured both Auroraa and Christian, their friend who was just new to modeling. I was in quite a bit of pain but managed to get through it, and managed to get some good pictures from up in the hills overlooking the lake. Christian did a good job considering he was a novice. Unfortunately the first shoot was going to be the maternity shoot, but initially there was the possibility of moving it later in the tour. As driving seemed to aggravate my back as much as anything we tried to adjust the tour sites and abandon those requiring long drives. The next day we had two shoots around the Great Salt Lake, the first on Antelope Island in the morning just using Auroraa, and we again returned to Stansburry Island near sunset with Auroraa and Christian. I did manage to get some nice shots, but it was very taxing on my back. By the next day I was in such pain I couldn’t even comfortably get out of bed and hobble to the bathroom in my hotel room. I ended up cancelling all the shoots for that day. Dima, Christian (who had had recent experience with back issues) and Auroraa were great with helping me out with care, ice packs, a back brace and getting medication.

After a day of bed rest, they identified a beautiful house of their artist friend DeVon in highlands of Salt Lake City where we could shoot. This could be done without driving far, and I could do a lot of the shooting sitting down. While still a challenge to my back this turned out to be a very nice location, and I shot some nice pictures of Auroraa and Christen. The next day Christian had arranged an appointment for me to see a physical therapist (who did what he termed “structural ingetration”). Having never had any kind of massage before I agreed because I was actually worried about being able to manage the trip home on the following day. He really worked me over, but I think it was a good thing. After some rest, later in the evening Aurora and Dima had me over to their house for a barbeque of some grilled meat and salad prepared in a traditional Russian style. It was a nice evening of good food and socializing. The next day I headed off to the airport and managed to get home more or less intact.

From one perspective the trip was a disaster. The originally planned agenda with 8 locations including up in the Uinta Mountains, working two male models, and a maternity shoot fell by the wayside due to my physical condition. Trying to look at things in a positive light, I still managed to get 4 different shoots at some beautiful locations, and even though the only male model that I was able to work with was a novice I still was able to get some experience with that and take some interesting photos. I also got to experience some extreme care and kindness from the group. Luckily I was the only photographer for this tour, so it allowed a lot of flexibility around my situation. Now I just hope my back recuperates in a reasonable amount of time.

My One and Only Shakespeare of the Year

Twelfth Night, Sparc Theater, 2024After dropping in for a short bit on the annual VDM birthday party, I joined Bob and a friend attending the Sparc Theater’s production of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. As a number of issues arose this summer that made me decide not to try and attend a number of my usual Shakespeare festivals or other plays, this is probably the only play and in particular Shakespeare play that I will probably see this year. Sad in many ways, but hopefully future years will get me back into that rhythm.

After a long stretch of very hot weather, this turned out to be a nice warm, but not too hot night. The play was well done. They reset the play in the southern US, but the accents seemed to drift in and out a bit. The surroundings were beautiful as always; the sunset over the vineyards was particularly nice. From the first few lines of the play I knew I was missing live theater. Luckily I knew it fairly well as the entire cast was only about 6 people, and when you have a play that’s already confusing identities it always makes it a little more challenging. Next year I definitely need to see more live theater.

Meghan Claire On A Hot Day

Meghan Claire, Livermore, 2024On a day that ultimately peaked at 108° I had the chance to work again with traveling model Meghan Claire while she was visiting the area. Since I knew hot hot it was going to get we strategically decided to shoot in the garage first before it got too hot. We succeeded a bit, but I think I stayed a little too long because it was pretty hot when we finished in there. Luckily I had a new fan. I had tried to briefly work on some light painting shots. In our time left we went back in to the cooler house. I always stress that I’ll never have enough to do for 4 hours, but time always seems to run by too fast. I think we got some nice shots, and it was certainly nice to see Meghan again after a couple of years.

Another Trip To The Beach

Vivian Cove, Panther Beach, 2024After getting up at 5 am (after only 2 hours of sleep) I headed down to Santa Cruz for a photoshoot with Vivian Cove, someone with whom I’ve worked both at retreats around the world and one-on-one at my house. The temperature was forecast to be 105° at my house so I was happy to be spending at least the first part of the day in a cooler region. Driving down it was clear and sunny until I reached just outside Santa Cruz where the marine layer / fog was sitting heavy making it cool and a bit gloomy. We went to Panther Beach, which is near to Santa Cruz. After a bit of a climb down we pretty much had the place to ourselves as we were there pretty early. We made some nice shots in the foggy/misty scenes, and then about 2/3 of the time through our shoot, the sun managed to break through and the marine layer got burned off. Although we weren’t there quite as long as some of my shoots we managed to get some interesting images. I look forward to our next outing on the coast.

To The Coast With Jennifer Jones

Jennifer Jones, Bean Hollow State Beach, 2024I journeyed through morning traffic over to the Pacific coast and down south of Half Moon Bay to meet up with Jennifer Jones. It was a bit of a drive, but it was nice to see the ocean again. However, it’s also interesting to see the mood change in leaving the sunny inland and arriving at the gray cloudy coast. We met up at Bean Hollow State Beach and took some pictures among the interesting rock structures that had been carved out by the wind and sea. Interestingly (small world) we ran into Eva Luna who was also at the beach, down on a visit from Portland.

After a couple of hours at the beach we headed inland to explore some redwoods. We went to Butano State Park and took a nice hike along Little Butano Creek and went a ways up the Mill Ox Trail. It was a beautiful, peaceful area. The sun just started breaking through the clouds as we were about to leave.

Afterwards, we headed back into Pescadero and had a nice (late) lunch at a surprisingly good local restaurant. I headed back home, again encountering rush hour traffic. All-in-all an enjoyable day that ended up being 11 hours from the time I left until I returned home.

Die Zauberflöte

SF Opera, The Magic Flute, 2024Tonight I went into the city with Bob to see San Francisco Opera’s production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte). We drove to BART and then took the train into the city. Prior to the opera we had a nice dinner at Max’s. It was a warm day in the valley and it was still pleasantly warm in the city.

In my limited experience in opera, this opera has been my favorite. I remembered that the music was great, but I didn’t really remember the story. This production was very different than a standard opera (preview). The staging was a multimedia video showing of backgrounds and exposition, and the singers generally appeared only partially in this 2-D setting. The look appeared like a movie from the silent movie era. The animations in the background reminded me of those in Monty Python. I found it engaging although different. Bob absolutely hated it. The music was the same, but he didn’t like that the singers weren’t really doing acting, mostly appearing in front of the video. That didn’t bother me so much. It was quite impressive how they matched the live actor/singers to the various moving background images. In the end I didn’t come away feeling like I was blown away by The Magic Flute as I had been in the past. Maybe my tastes have just changed. Nevertheless, it was a very enjoyable production and a fun evening.

Mount Diablo With Jessa Ray

Jessa Ray, Mount Diablo, CA, 2024During a week where my schedule kept bouncing around, I managed to get together with my Colorado based collaborator Jessa Ray. We first worked together a couple a years ago in Colorado in the foothills outside of Denver. We also worked previously at my house. This week we decided to try and explore up on Mount Diablo.

This week I had scheduled a day to work with her, and then I had a dentist appointment scheduled for the next day. She missed a train connection, so we had to reschedule time. Then my dentist’s milling machine broke and I needed to reschedule that appointment. So I again rescheduled with Jessa. I was trying to avoid potential crowds around the Memorial Day weekend. As it was we didn’t really see any people until we were leaving. It was a nice, but not overly hot day and we had a pleasant hike.

Afterwards, we got some late lunch/early dinner in a nice Mexican restaurant down in Danville. I was totally exhausted when I got home. It was a good day, but I still have the dentist to deal with.

Art In The City

Dan, San Francisco, 2024I made a trek into the city to see an exhibition of Irving Penn photography at the de Young museum. I had succumbed to heavy advertising on Instagram, but it was nonetheless something I was interested in seeing. I also remember why I don’t undertake such journeys as often as I used to. I left at around 10:30 thinking I would escape the worst of the traffic. But I didn’t. It was slow going in the valley, sometimes stop-and-go, then the Bay Bridge was also very congested, not helped due to a crash that had blocked some lanes. Then I had to navigate downtown SF and find the parking garage. I finally made it there after about an hour and a half.

I think this is the first time I’ve been to the de Young. It was very nice, right across from the California Academy of Sciences, and set nicely in Golden Gate park. I mainly went there for the Irving Penn exhibition, and spent a bit of time looking at the photos. It was interesting to see the variety of his work. A couple of features particularly were interesting. First, his nudes were all headless — not all bodyscapes, but all separated from their person as distinct from his portraiture. Second, it was interesting to see how unsharpe some of the photos were compared to what seems to be demanded from today’s technology. Despite that they were still very impactful.

Traffic back was as bad as going, even though I left around 2:00. I’m glad I don’t have to drive in that mess every day. But it was nice to see some inspiring photography.

Cheyannigans

Cheyanne, Livermore, 2024Returning a bit to normal after my month of jury duty, I had the opportunity to work with a new model who had reached out to me from Australia, Cheyanne. She’s had been touring around the western US, and while our originally scheduled date was somewhat in jeopardy due to my jury duty obligations, I was able to reschedule our shoot to the weekend (and then jury duty ended anyway). She had a bit of a challenge getting to me on BART, and the weather was gray and rainy braking a long streak of nice weather. Nevertheless, we had a nice shoot inside trying various backgrounds and wardrobe, and ending up with some light painting. She was very experienced and great to work with, and I hope I get the chance to do so again.
